Taegeuk 1
  1. Swivel 90′ to your left. This brings you into walking stance- left foot in front. As you turn do a left arm low block.
  2. Step forward with your right foot into walking stance. While you step do a right arm middle section punch.
  3. Step with your right foot and turn 180′ to your right. This brings you into walking stance with your right foot forward. As you turn do a right arm low block.
  4. Step forward with your left foot into walking stance. As you step do a left arm middle section punch.
  5. Step 90′ to the left with your left foot into front stance. Do a low block with your left arm.
  6. Keep your feet where they are and do a right arm middle section punch.
  7. Step your right foot up to the right side of your left foot and turn 90′to the right. You should end up in walking stance with your right foot forward. As you turn do an inwards middle block with your left arm.
  8. Step forwards with your left foot into walking stance. As you step do a right arm middle section punch.
  9. Swivel through to your left 180′ so you end up in walking stance with your left foot forwards. While you turn do a right arm inward middle block.
  10. Step forwards with your right foot into walking stance and do a left arm middle punch.
  11. Step to the right with your right foot. Turn through 90′ to end up in front stance with your right foot forwards. Do a right arm low block.
  12. Keep your feet where they are and do a left arm middle section punch.
  13. Bring your left foot up in to the side of your right foot and swivel 90′ to your left. You should be in walking stance with your left foot in front. Do a high block with your left arm.
  14. Do a front kick with your right leg to land the leg in front in walking stance. Do a right hand middle section punch.
  15. Step with your right foot and turn to your right 180′ to end up in walking stance with your right foot in front. Do a high block with your right arm.
  16. Do a front kick with your left leg to land the leg in front in walking stance. Do a left hand middle section punch.
  17. Now step your left foot round to turn 90′ to your right into front stance. Do a left arm low block.
  18. Step forward into front stance with your right foot in front. Do a right arm mid section punch. Ki-hup!
Taegeuk 2
  1. Swivel 90′ to your left. This brings you into walking stance- left foot in front. As you turn do a left arm low block.
  2. Step forward with your right foot into front stance. Do a right arm middle section punch.
  3. Step with your right foot and turn 180′ to your right. This brings you into walking stance with your right foot forward. Do a right arm low block.
  4. Step forward with your left foot into front stance. Do a left arm middle section punch.
  5. Step 90′ to the left with your left foot into walking stance. Do a inner middle block with your right arm.
  6. Step forwards with your right foot into walking stance. Do a inner middle block with your left arm.
  7. Step your to the left with your left foot and turn 90′ to your left. You should end up in walking stance with your left foot in front. Do a low block with your left arm.
  8. Do a front kick with your right leg and land in front stance with your right foot in front. As you land complete a right arm face punch.
  9. Step with your right foot and turn 180′ to your right so you end up in walking stance with your right foot forwards. Do a right arm low block as you turn.
  10. Do a front kick with your left leg and land in front stance with your left foot in front. As you land complete a left arm face punch.
  11. Step to the left with your left foot. Turn through 90′ to end up in walking stance with your left foot forwards. Do a left arm high section block.
  12. Step forwards in walking stance and do a right arm high section block.
  13. Step with your left foot and turn 270′ to your left to end in walking stance with your left foot in front. Do a right arm middle block.
  14. Keep your feet pretty much where they are and swivel 180′ to your right. You end up in walking stance with your right foot in front. Do a left arm middle block as you turn.
  15. Step with your left foot. Turn 90′ to your left into walking stance and do a left arm low block.
  16. Do a right leg front kick to land in walking stance. Do a right arm middle punch.
  17. Do a left leg front kick to land in walking stance. Do a left arm middle punch.
  18. Do a right leg front kick to land in walking stance. Do a right arm middle punch. Ki-hup!
Taegeuk 3
  1. Swivel 90′ to your left. This brings you into walking stance- left foot in front. As you turn do a left arm low block.
  2. Do a front kick with your right leg and land in front stance with your right foot in front. As you land complete a right then left double middle punch.
  3. Step with your right foot and turn 180′ to your right. This brings you into walking stance with your right foot forward. Do a right arm low block.
  4. Do a front kick with your left leg and land in front stance with your left foot in front. As you land complete a left then right double middle punch.
  5. Step 90′ to the left with your left foot into walking stance. Do a right inner knife-hand strike to the neck.
  6. Step forwards with your right foot into walking stance. Do a left inner knifehand strike to the neck.
  7. Here’s the cool bit of taegeuk-sam-jang. Step your to the left with your left foot and turn 90′ to your left. You should end up in back stance with your left foot in front. As you turn do a left single knifehand.
  8. Change to front stance and do a right hand middle punch.
  9. Turn 180′ to your right so you end up in back stance with your right foot forwards. Do a right single knifehand as you turn.
  10. Change to front stance and do a left hand middle punch.
  11. Step to the left with your left foot. Turn through 90′ to end up in walking stance with your left foot forwards. Do a right arm inner middle block.
  12. Step forwards in walking stance and do a left arm inner middle block.
  13. Step with your left foot and turn 270′ to your left to end in walking stance with your left foot in front. Do a left arm low block.
  14. Do a front kick with your right leg and land in front stance with your right foot in front. As you land complete a right then left double middle punch.
  15. Turn 180′ to your right so you end up in walking stance with your right foot forwards. Do a right low block as you turn.
  16. Do a front kick with your left leg and land in front stance with your left foot in front. As you land complete a left then right double middle punch.
  17. Step your to the left with your left foot and turn 90′ to your left. You should be in walking stance with your left foot in front. Do a left arm low block as you turn.
  18. Keep you feet where they are and do a right arm middle punch.
  19. Step forwards in walking stance and do a right arm low block.
  20. Keep you feet where they are and do a left arm middle punch.
  21. Do a left front kick to land in walking stance with the left leg in front. Do a left low block.
  22. Keep you feet where they are and do a right arm middle punch.
  23. Do a right front kick to land in walking stance with the right leg in front. Do a right low block.
  24. Keep you feet where they are and do a left arm middle punch. Ki-hup!
Taegeuk 4
  1. Swivel 90′ to your left. This brings you into back stance- left foot in front. As you turn do a mid-section double knife-hand.
  2. Step forward into long stance with your right foot in front. Do a left mid section pressing block. Then a right spear finger strike.
  3. Swivel on your left foot and turn 180′ to your right into back stance (right foot in front). As you turn do a mid-section double knife-hand.
  4. Step forward into long stance with your left foot in front. Do a right mid section pressing block. Then a left spear finger strike.
  5. Swivel on your right foot turn to the left 90 degrees into end in long forward stance with you left foot in front. As you turn do a left high section knife-hand block and and a right inward knife-hand strike at neck level.
  6. Do a right front kick stepping forward into front stance with your right foot forwards. As your foot lands complete a left mid section punch
  7. OK here’s the tricky bit of taegeuk-sah-jang. Do a side kick with your left leg to end in walking stance with your left leg in font.
  8. Then do a side kick with your right leg to end in back stance with your right foot in front. As you land complete a mid-section double knife-hand. As you can see Deb’s side kicks still need a lot more work!
  9. Now swivel on your right foot and turn 270′ to your left to end in back stance with your left foot in front. As you turn do a left mid section outer forearm block.
  10. Do a front kick with your right leg but step it back this time into back stance with your left foot forwards. As you land complete a right inward middle block.
  11. Swivel on your left foot to turn 180′ to your right. You should be in back stance with your left foot forwards. As you finish the turn complete a right mid section outer forearm block.
  12. Do a front kick with your left leg and step it back into back stance keeping your right foot forwards. As you land complete a left inward middle block.
  13. Swivel on your right foot turn to the left 90 degrees into end in long forward stance with you left foot in front. As you turn do a left high section knife-hand block and and a right inward knife-hand strike at neck level.
  14. Do a right leg front kick and step forwards into front stance with your right foot in front. Do a right back fist strike at nose level.
  15. Swivel on the right foot and step with your left to turn 90′ to your left into walking stance. As you finish the turn complete a left inward block.
  16. Keep your feet where they are and do a right mid section punch
  17. Keep your feet pretty much where they are and swivel 180′ to your right into walking stance. Do a right inward middle block as you complete the turn.
  18. Keep your feet where they are and do a left mid section punch
  19. Swivel on your right foot and turn 90′ to your left into front stance with your left leg forwards. As you turn complete a left inner middle block.
  20. Keep you feet where they are and do a double mid section punch – right then left.
  21. Step your right forward into front stance and do a right inner middle block.
  22. Keep you feet where they are and do then double mid section double punch left then right. Ki-hup!
Taegeuk 5
  1. Swivel 90′ to your left into front stance- left foot in front. As you turn do a left low block.
  2. Slide your left foot back to your right foot to form an upright L shaped stance. Do a left hammer fist strike to the top of your opponent’s head.
  3. Swivel on your left foot turn to 180′to your right step your right foot out into front stance. As you turn do a right low block.
  4. Slide your right foot back to your left foot to form an upright L shaped stance. Do a right hammer fist strike to the top of your opponent’s head.
  5. Step 90′ to the left with your left foot into front stance. Do a left inner middle block. Keep your feet still and do a right inner middle block.
  6. Do a right leg front kick and to land in right front stance. As you land do a right back fist strike to your opponent’s nose. Then keep your feet where they are and do a left inner middle block.
  7. Do a left leg front kick and to land in left front stance. As you land do a left back fist strike to your opponent’s nose. Then keep your feet where they are and do a right inner middle block.
  8. Step forwards into right long stance. As you land your foot do a right back fist strike to your opponent’s nose. (Some styles ki-hup here in taegeuk oh jang.)
  9. Swivel through 270′ to your left so you end up in back stance with your left foot forwards. As you finish the turn execute a left single mid section knife-hand block.
  10. Step forwards with your right foot into front stance and do a right high section elbow strike. (Styles vary here, sometimes the elbow strikes into the left palm, sometimes the left palm cups the right fist.)
  11. Swivel through 180′ to your right so you end up in back stance with your right foot forwards. As you finish the turn execute a right single mid section knife-hand block.
  12. Step forwards with your left foot into front stance and do a left high section elbow strike.
  13. Swivel on your right foot, step 90′ to your left into left front stance. Do a left low block.
  14. Keep your feet where they are and do a right inner middle block.
  15. Do a front kick with your right leg to land the leg in front in front stance. Do a right low block.
  16. Keep your feet where they are and do a left inner middle block.
  17. Swivel on your right foot turn 90′ to your left into left front stance (some clubs teach walking stance here), do a left high section block.
  18. Now the bit we find tricky in all taekwondo patterns- side kick! Do a right side kick (some styles do a side punch at the same time) and then land in right front stance. Do a mid section elbow strike- your left elbow strikes into you right palm.
  19. Swivel on your left foot and turn 180 degrees to your right into right front stance (again some clubs teach walking stance) and do a right high section block.
  20. Here’s the second side kick. Do a left side kick (again some styles do a side punch at the same time), land in left front stance. Do a mid section elbow strike- your right elbow strikes into you left palm.
  21. Swivel on your right foot and turn 90′ to your left into left front stance. Do a left low block followed by a right inner middle block.
  22. Do a right front kick. There are 2 variations we know of this last bit. Some clubs teach a stamp with the right foot and and others teach a jump. Either way you end up in X stance with your left foot behind your right and finish with a right back fist strike and a Key-hup!
Taegeuk 6
  1. Swivel 90′ to your left into left front stance. As you turn do a left low block.
  2. Do a right front kick and bring your leg back to land in back stance- (your right foot is behind your left) as you land do a left middle section outer forearm block.
  3. Swivel 180′to to your right into right front stance. As you turn do a right low block.
  4. Do a left front kick and bring your leg back to land in back stance- (your left foot is behind your right) as you land do a right middle section outer forearm block.
  5. Step 90′ to the left with your left foot into front stance. Do a right outer forearm knife hand block. (This feels a bit awkward as your body is a bit twisted at this point)
  6. Do a right turning kick. This is usually taught as a traditional turning kick with the knee raised from behind and your toes pulled back. Land in riding stance before quickly stepping into left front stance. Do a left high section outer forearm block followed by a right mid section punch.
  7. Do a right front kick to land in right front stance. As you land do a left mid section punch.
  8. Swivel on your left foot, to turn 180′ to your right into right front stance. Do a right high section outer forearm block followed by a left mid section punch.
  9. Do a left front kick to land in left front stance. As you land do a right mid section punch.
  10. Swivel on your right foot, turn 90 degrees to your left into ready stance. Do a high section X block moving slowly down into twin low block. Around 5 seconds is about right. We find these slow sections of taekwondo forms are a great chance breathe and focus.
  11. Step forwards with your right foot into right front stance. Do a left outer forearm knife hand block.
  12. Do a left turning kick (head section if you can) and key-up and land briefly in riding stance.
  13. Swivel on you left foot 180′ degrees to your right into right front stance. Do a right arm low block.
  14. Do a left front kick and bring your leg back to land in back stance- (your left foot is behind your right) as you land do a right middle section outer forearm block.
  15. Swivel 180′ to your left into left front stance and do a left low block.
  16. Do a right front kick and bring your leg back to land in back stance- (your right foot is behind your left) as you land do a left middle section outer forearm block.
  17. Swivel on your left foot step your right foot back and 90′ to your right into back stance. Do a left double knife-hand block.
  18. Step back into back stance again. Do a right double knife-hand block.
  19. Step back into left front stance. Do a left palm block followed by a right mid section punch.
  20. Then step back into right front stance. Do a right palm block followed by a left mid section punch.
Taegeuk 7
  1. Swivel 90′ to your left into left cat stance. As you turn do a right palm block.
  2. Do a right front kick and come back to your original stance. Do a left inner mid section inner block. (It takes a bit of practise to get used to shifting your weight on and off your left foot. Take your time here.)
  3. Swivel 180′ into your right into right cat stance do a left palm block.
  4. Do a left front kick then step back into your original cat stance a do a right inner section middle block.
  5. Step 90′ to the left with your left foot into back stance. Do a low section double knife hand guarding block.
  6. Step forward into back stance and do another low section double knife hand guarding block.
  7. Step 90′ to your left into left cat stance. Do a left palm block (you are blocking a punch here). Use your right fist to support your left elbow.
  8. Do a right back fist strike to the bridge of your opponent’s nose.
  9. Turn 180′ to your right into right cat stance. Do a right palm bock using your left fist to support your elbow.
  10. Do a left back fist strike to the bridge of your opponent’s nose.
  11. Bring your feet together and turn 90′ to your left. Bring your hands together and slowly bring them up under your chin. Your right fist is cupped inside your left palm. Here’s your chance in taegeuk chil jang to re-focus and breathe!
  12. Step your left foot forward into front stance. Now you need to do 2 blocks at once. Do a left inner forearm block and a right low block. Then swap to do a right inner forearm block and a left low block.
  13. OK now step forwards into right front stance. Now do another right inner forearm block and left low block. Then a left inner forearm block and a right low block.
  14. Swivel right foot to turn 270′ degrees to your left into left front stance. Do a twin outer forearm wedging block.
  15. Reach as if grabbing your opponents head and pull the ‘head’ down as you lift and strike with your right knee. Step your right foot into front stance.
  16. Bring your left foot behind your right into X stance and do a twin upset punch.
  17. Move your left foot back so you are in front stance again and do a low section X block. (Chamber this block from your left hip.)
  18. Swivel on your left foot and turn 180′ into right front stance. Do a twin outer forearm wedging block.
  19. Reach as if grabbing your opponents head and pull the ‘head’ down as you lift and strike with your left knee. Step your left foot into front stance.
  20. Bring your right foot behind your right into X stance and do a twin upset punch.
  21. Move your right foot back so you are in front stance again and do a low section X block.
  22. Swivel on your right foot turn 90′ to your left into an upright L shaped stance. Do a left back fist strike to the side of the head.
  23. Open your hand and do a right crescent kick into your palm. Land in horse riding stance and do a right elbow strike into your left palm.
  24. Open your hand, do a left crescent kick into your right palm. Land in horse riding stance and do a left elbow strike into your right palm.
  25. Stay in horse riding stance and do a slow deliberate left single knife hand.
  26. Step forward again into riding stance and do a right sided punch and Key-hup!
Taegeuk 8
  1. Taegeuk pal jang is the only one of the taegeuk taekwondo patterns that starts with a move forwards. Step forwards with your left leg into back stance. Do a double mid section guarding block with closed fists.
  2. Shift from back stance to front stance and do a right mid section punch.
  3. Do a jump front kick with a key-hup. Land in left front stance and as you land do a left inner middle block.
  4. Keep your feet where they are and do a double mid section punch right then left.
  5. Step forward into right front stance and do a right mid section punch.
  6. Swivel on your right foot. Bring your left foot round behind you so that you 90′ to your left. You end up in front stance with your right foot in front but your head is turned to face the opposite way to the stance.
  7. As you complete the turn do a left low block and a right high section outer forearm block.
  8. Now slowly turn your body to the left keeping your feet where they are so you end up in left front stance. Do a slow right upset punch.
  9. Step your left foot across in front of your right to land briefly in cross stance before stepping your right foot out into left front stance. Again turn to face your back foot.
  10. As you complete the step do a right low block and a left high section outer forearm block.
  11. Now slowly turn your body to the right, keeping your feet where they are so you end up in right front stance. Do a slow left upset punch.
  12. Swivel on your left foot, and take your right foot round to the left 90′ to end up in back stance. Do a double knife hand block as you turn.
  13. Change into front stance and do a right mid section punch.
  14. Do a right front kick bring your foot back to where it was, step back one pace with your left foot and sink into cat stance (right foot in front). Do a right palm block.
  15. Swivel on your right foot 90′ to your left and sink into cat stance- left foot in front. Do a mid section double knife hand block.
  16. Do a front kick with your left leg and step down into front stance. Do a right mid section punch.
  17. Bring you left leg back into cat stance and do a left palm block.
  18. Turn 180′ to your right into cat stance (right foot in front). Do a right mid section double knife-hand block.
  19. Do a front kick with your right leg and step down into front stance. Do a left mid section punch.
  20. Bring you right leg back into cat stance and do a right palm block.
  21. Swivel on your left foot, turn 90′ to your right into back stance and do a twin forearm low section block.
  22. Turn 180′ to your right into cat stance (right foot in front). Do a right mid section double knife-hand block.
  23. Do a left front kick but don’t land it. Then do a jumping right front kick and key-hup. Land in right front stance and do a right inner middle block.
  24. Keep your feet where they are and do a left then right mid section double punch.
  25. Swivel on your right foot and turn 270′ to your left into back stance do a left mid section single knife hand block.
  26. Step into left front stance and do a right elbow strike. Then a right back fist strike and then a left mid section punch.
  27. Turn 180′ to your right into back stance and do a right single knife hand mid section block.
  28. Step into right front stance and do a left elbow strike. Then do a left back fist strike and a right mid section punch.
